V A C A T I O N . . . T I M E !!!

Guilford and I are so excited about our time of relaxation and fiddle farting (excuse please) starting Saturday and ending on Friday morning of next week. We will be heading south to "the land that I love" early Saturday morning, probably stopping by Sybil's Family Restaurant in Jesup, GA for lunch and arriving mid-afternoon in Brunswick. It will be a much needed diversion from work, but lucky for all of you E-Train email readers out there, not for email. Thought you were going to get a break, too, didn't you? Not so easy.

We will be taking the laptop and I will be sending and receiving as usual when we are not eating at one of the local restaurants or enjoying the ocean breezes at the Pier. I hear we may be in for a few rainstorms prompted by one of those tropical storms heading towards the East Coast, but who cares!!!! Surf's up, dude and dudettes! Guilford can watch the US Open tennis matches in the hotel room and I can email and take short, wet hikes to the Pier and Village area, or maybe go the other way on Mallery to the Dairy Queen. It's going to be great!

I will be using the G-Mail address starting tonight, so our conversations can be continued even if I am away from my home computer. Hooray for G-Mail!!!! That's one thing I can't do with my old BellSouth email account. If you send something tonight, say before bedtime, your message should get sent out tonight, before bedtime. So, Walter, don't be doing no "night owl" emailing if you want it shared before we leave. After we leave in the morning any message sent to my bellsouth account will be sent, if it is still timely (not outdated), when we get home on Friday night.

How's that for a plan??

Of course, if any of you have created contact groups from your address lists where you can send out to lots of classmates at one time by clicking on the Send button, go for it. That's what was intended when we started all this mess back in August of 2005. Isn't it great?? Just make sure I get your message, too. Don't want to miss anything.

It's great to be a 67 classmate, isn't it?

PARKER LOW COUNTRY BOIL REPORT
September 4, 2011

Bill and Tannis Parker did it again, folks. The Low Country Boil was a big hit. It was so good seeing all the classmates, spouses and SO's attending, and the food was delicious. Lots of cameras flashing so we should see some good pictures soon. Everybody looked great and there was a lot of hugging and patting going on.

We understand that Dwayne Johnson went home from the hospital today, and that's good news for us all. Dwayne and Cindy didn't make it to the LCB, understandably, and there were a few no-shows and others who came without signing in. After eating we actually put all the chairs in a big circle so we could have one big conversation, then Jeff Kilgore arrived and brought the rain with him, so we all moved inside. It was a great time of being together. That's the way I saw it. I even think Guilford had a good time. She loved the cheese squares and talking with the classmates.

Just thought you all would be interested to know that while having lunch at the Old Times buffet in Brunswick with Guilford, my sister, brother-in-law and Mom, we saw Becky Sorrow Wahl having lunch with her brother and father. She looked great, and she was so cute when she was visiting the dessert bar and choosing a scrumptious looking chocolate fudge and whipped topping cupcake or sundae type of thing. As she was turning to walk back to her table she looked around and noticed we were all looking at her. She walked over to our table again to try and explain her actions, but didn't have anything to say since we had just visited the dessert bar right before her. It was funny! As usual, Becky was as sweet the dessert in her plastic cup, and with a big smile on her face. Good to see you again, Becky!

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

45th Reunion Glynn Academy
Class of 1967

October 5-6-7, 2012

The '67 Reunion Committee Decision:
November 16, 2010

At tonight's meeting we decided to go ahead with plans to have the 45th Reunion of the Class of '67 the weekend of October 5th and 6th of 2012. This gives everyone at least 22 months to plan on attending. Since it is also Columbus Day weekend many of our classmates may want to stay an extra day to have longer to visit.

The place will be the Oceanside Inn and Suites (the old Wanderer) there is a large room for the meal and dance on Saturday evening. On Friday, weather permitting, we will have a cocktail reception in an open air pavilion. We don't have Saturday noon time planned as of this time. We need to do some more checking and cost analysis on where to have the picnic type get-together.

The web site is: oceansideinnandsuites.com

I'll have a contact name tomorrow for anyone wishing to start booking rooms. The rates quoted to us when we met with the Director of Sales ranged from $68.00 per night to $131.00 per night.

The cost for the weekends activities will be $125.00 per person, if paid in full by August 15 2012, after that date it will be $150.00 per person. We are unable to charge separately for each night or for one night and the picnic. If someone finds it more convenient to make payments of $25.00 every three months until paid in full that will be fine.

We will be putting out an email soon with all the details to be followed up with snail mail if needed.

Bill Parker

PS: We will have a band for this reunion.

Maybe We Should Forget About a 45th Reunion

September 23, 2011

It’s hard to believe this is a Friday night. Remember when we had maybe fifteen or more classmates emailing in to say they were “with us” and checking in? Friday nights aren’t what they used to be evidently. It’s like the Shoney’s Drive-In is closing down all over again.

I know Bill Parker is out there. Right, Bill? Bill? BILL?
BB

************

MAYBE WE SHOULD FORGET ABOUT A 45TH REUNION!
BILL PARKER

************

That might be a good plan. Our 50th Class of ‘67 / 67 Birthday Party Reunion. We should just have a dinner somewhere though and then go home. Don’t know if we will be able to take much more than that compared to what we could have done at a 45th Class Reunion. This is a morbid thought, but we lost 6 classmates last year and 5 so far this year. Let’s just say five a year. Five a year for five years is twenty-five. Twenty-five less classmates to make name tags for and feed. Jan (if she is still with us) can cut back on the “G” ball cap order significantly. Lots of possibilities, BP.
BB ‘67

************

Wait 5 more years. Bill Parker

************

Alright, folks...Let's not get toooooo morbid. We have too much to celebrate and enjoy...
Betty T.

************

I'm on a Cobb County bus going back to Smyrna after an Atlanta Symphony concert where I heard Beethoven's 9th symphony. That's "Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee" for you Southern Baptists. See, some of us still go out on weekend nights.

September 24, 2011

Greetings,
Linda & I still try to keep Friday evening a "date night". Y'all can imagine the Lit'l Lady's response to my spending her night out in front of a computer ...
Our bedroom temperature and wind chill would be lower than Tori's in Antarctica!!

"MAYBE WE SHOULD FORGET ABOUT A 45TH REUNION" ????

Maybe Bill Parker & Committee have numbers the rest of us don't know about to raise this concern and possibility. Compared to our 40th Reunion, there isn't the same generation of email discussion or interest. That said, our 45th Reunion is scheduled just over a year away and maybe email, FaceBook and/or Tweets among GA'67ers will start increasing.

To my way of thinking, the escalating departure of classmates from this life, especially unconnected classmates, makes our 45th Reunion increasingly important and relevant. At the current rate we're experiencing and hopefully more persuasive than morbid, one can reasonably estimate our 45th Reunion will be the last one possible for roughly 60 classmates.

Many of us have yet to see the Harold Jennings Memorial, the Glynn Academy Museum in the old GA schoolhouse recently returned to campus, or the Memorial Bricks on the GA campus (a project our class might consider.)

I have had the 45th Reunion announcement in the website since November, 2010. Maybe it's time to generate email conversation about what classmates desire to do during the 45th Reunion. I feel pretty certain one classmate has no desire to sit on a cactus again...
Steve Holcomb

Friday night is mine and Harry's "date night" also. I am with Linda.
I do not like for anything to interfere with our night out.
Wanda Day Hallman

************

It's mine and Stephen's as well. Even though I went to work afterwards, we at least went out to dinner and caught up with each other's week (many days we barely see each other with all our doings). We feel we need a time set aside each week that is just for the two of us. If you do not have a date night with your spouse/SO, start now!
Teresa McVeigh

I have not said anything so far, but I will be there. Lee Hand

************

Aw most of us are "lurkers". We are reading everyday but not always commenting.
Just don't post anything and we all start asking "got any mail from Billy?" "Is Billy out of town?" So don't get discouraged!!! We are here.
Kathie Ray Akins

************

I was really looking forward to the reunion. I know it is a lot of work for the committee but I have always had lots of fun.
Rose Anne Rountree Moore

- - - - - - - - - - - -

We’re just joking around, Rose Anne. It was too quiet for a Friday night and I guess Bill and I thought we’d just see if anybody was out there. There is no way we would not have a 45th, especially after the success of the 40th, and the fact that some of us may not be around for the 50th. Sorry for the confusion.
Billy B ‘67

- - - - - - - - - -

You got me good. At least you know I am coming. Rose Anne Rountree Moore

************

Billy,
I know that I live too far away to help with all the preparations for a reunion, but I would like to suggest an additional informal gathering if we go with a dinner only. I know that personally both Bane and I were looking forward to coming to the festivities next October and it would be hard to see/talk to everyone at a 2 hour dinner. How about a simple meet and greet gathering the night before at a good local BBQ place? All we need to do is get a headcount, gather the money and go. Or we could just pay as we go. Or perhaps we could have a Reception/Welcome Room at a local hotel the afternoon of the dinner? Just a thought.
Chris Odom Ashley

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Hello, Chris. It’s me....Billy B.
I hope by now you and all the other emailing classmates realize that any talk about not having a 45th Class Reunion is totally bogus. Bill and I were just trying to wake everybody up on a slow emailing night. Your suggestions are good, but I think our Planning Committee has more in store for us.
Sorry for the confusion.

How Was the Cruise?

September 7, 2011

Danny, How was the cruise? BB

************

The cruise was fabulous. And wouldn't you know I shared the boat with none other than Donald Rumsfeld and Ralph Reed? I figured they hopped on to go to Juneau to talk Sarah Palin into running for president but I suppose lately Alaska is the last place you'd find her. Actually, there was a C-PAC convention on board.

I spent a day in Seattle and got to visit the Space Needle. The $18 fee to go to the top was just about worth it for the views of the Olympic Mountains. Mount Rainer was spectacular.

We set sail Saturday and arrived in Juneau Monday. Tuesday was Sitka, Wednesday was a glacier, and Friday was Victoria, BC.

As soon as I figure how to get the pictures off my phone and into a file, I'll share them with the class.

Where's Waldo Andy Hall?

September 7, 2011

Billy,
First a funny 'maiden name' story I may have told you before but it's more than appropriate for this subject.

Back in the 1990's I kept getting obscene phone calls every week. They'd always ask for Candy and I'd get a little p-ssed off and tell them there wasn't a Candy at this number. This went on and on, different guys, a lot of moaning, some out of breath, some tried to get a little nasty, just crazy stuff. I couldn't figure it out. So one day I was looking up something in the phone book and looked up my listing. Yep, I'd listed my name as C. Andy Hall and they were reading it as Candy. Hey, I changed that pretty quickly! Anyway, I guess there's a Candy Hall somewhere but not at my number.

Second I attach a "Where's Andy?" photo and yes I already know I was at Andy's.

Health Updates

September 4, 2011

Dwayne Johnson spent the night in the Brunswick Hospital, according to Cindy his wife, who spoke with Bill Parker. Please take a minute or two and say a prayer for Dwayne. They are thinking it has something to do with his blood pressure, and probably many of us can relate to that. Dwayne and Cindy are signed up to come to the LCB (Parker's Low Country Boil) Mini this afternoon, but we suspect that Cindy will nix that idea. Who knows? Afterall, he is widely known as "The Party Man".

Sad News for Classes '66 & '67

September 4, 2011

This is the worst part of my being your email operator, folks. Don't have all the details yet, but Stan Moore has passed away. He had suffered for quite a while with cancer in his brain and earlier this week he lost his battle with cancer, but won the victory when he blinked and found himself in his new and eternal home in Heaven. Stan leaves behind his wife, Bonnie Mann Moore, class of '67, and six children.

Hopefully, more details of his survivors and the arrangements will come out soon. Not sure if there has been or will be a memorial service open to all or if it will be private. Maybe someone could help with that information and enlighten all of us.

Like I said, this is the worst part of my duties as your email operator, but there is no way to hide from the fact that things like this will be happening more and more frequently as the days, months and years go by. it's a good time to stop and ask ourselves, "Am I ready?"

Please keep the Moore family and all of Stan's close friends in your thoughts and prayers during this sad time. I am sure they would appreciate that.

My Thoughts 9-11-11

September 10, 2011

My mind is filled with many thoughts as our nation commemorates the decade since September 11, 2001. The span of time has failed to soften my sharp memories of those dark events. Its resulting national shock wave has proven to rank with Pearl Harbor and JFK.

So much has changed since yet so much remains to be done before we find some satisfactory measure of finality. That goal may be unattainable for there were so many innocent lives sacrificed upon an altar of hate. Atonement for the injustices inflicted upon so many is, I believe, beyond human capabilities.

Maybe it was more than lives, glass and steel that fell in the fiery cascades. Have you noticed how often eyewitness accounts remind us of the "clear blue sky" that morning. A morning sky overflowing with hope and promise of a bright new day ahead. Then it all came crashing down.

Recall the lyrics of the Irving Berlin's old song "Blue Skies":

"Never saw the sun shining so bright,
Never saw things going so right;
Noticing the days hurrying by,
When you're in love, my how they fly.
Blue days all of them gone.
Nothing but blue skies from now on."

In the decade since, I fear our country has lost faith in clear blue skies and hope in bright futures. Something of our national optimism came crashing down and awaits resurrection from Ground Zero.

In the darkest hour there is a ray of hope.
There are times hope may only be seen through the eyes of faith.
But even those who have faith that could move mountains, but have no love, would be empty and living in darkness.
I recall that it was love that placed the rainbow in skies.
The message to us seems clear: our collective love can restore the rainbow.
It will shine hope upon those who despair in the darkness of their own Ground Zeroes.

And together we can resurrect a confident optimism to faithfully journey together under clear blue skies toward a glorious tomorrow.

WOW! What a beautiful piece! Thanks Steve and Billy for being sure so many of us are able to read it. Our love for each other can certainly make a statement, and with hope and prayers others will learn from the example of many.

God bless and let's all try to show even one person that we love them each and every day.

Like most everyone else, I have been thinking about that day, seems impossible that it was ten years ago, it is still fresh in my mind. One of the things that stuck in my memory was how quiet it was the next day with no planes in the sky. It was a very ominous silence to me, wondering if this was going to grow into a much larger thing right here at home. I resolved after thinking about the possibilities that I would be “all in” if that was what it was going to take, I felt the apprehension leave then.

About five years ago, I was in D.C. and the colonel I was with stopped for gas at a station situated between the new Air Force memorial and the Pentagon. The colonel, who had been in the pentagon close to where the plane hit, told me that it came right over that station on its way in. It was a peaceful morning with the normal D.C. traffic in the distance. Standing out behind the station, I was struck at how open the area was and what an easy target the pentagon must have been, even at 500 mph.

Calling BJC Alumni

Billy, During the last two years, I've had the pleasure of serving on the Athletic Futures Committee for the College of Coastal Georgia (BJC). It is absolutely remarkable how great the campus looks. But, the cosmetics are only the beginning. Just walking around the campus and getting a chance to visit with the current students makes you realize how special our new four year school is. And, how much it is going to mean not only to SE Georgia, but to all the students who have the chance to come to the Golden Isles to further their education.

I strongly encourage all of our class of '67 to come by for a visit. The dining room is fantastic! Come for lunch or dinner weekdays. Come to watch an NAIA men's or women's tennis match, volleyball game, basketball game, or a women's softball game. The student spirit and the facilities will blow you away. Sports not your cup of tea? Come for one of the many cultural events. Go to www.ccga.edu to learn more. I know there are many BJC alumni on your E-Train. I hope that they will all take the time to embrace the metamorphasis first hand. I'm sure that they will all be proud to have been part of the genesis.
Bear ~ Jimmy Parker

You are right on. How thrilled your mom would have been. I made the statement the place had not had that much energy since I stood with Buff in arms to show to my friends in the English department when I was teaching out there. It is incredible. What it will mean is unbelievable.

The story in the paper about John Littles and the Second Harvest was because two students from the college came, helped and thought others should know and called Trey Wood.

Hope everyone will realize the incredible gift the community and region has been given. Can't wait to see the art and history department grow.
Best,
Sudy Vance Leavy

Hey Gang,
I was in Brunswick for a few hours this past July and went by the campus before we headed on down to St. Mary's for a sailing adventure out into the Atlantic and a night on Cumberland. While in St. Mary's we toured the campus there and I must say, "If my dad and mom were still alive, they would be most impressed with how BJC has grown." I know I am and it gives me great pride seeing Earl's name on the Administration Building. I have fond memories of my time in Brunswick and the Golden Isles. Attached is a poem I wrote a number of years ago. I've tried to get Amy Carter to use it her magazine but as my editor at John Blair Publishers once said, "Gil, you ain't much of a poet." On the flip side of that my wife says I shouldn't sing in public. So much for God given talent. Enjoy the day.
Gil Forest Hargett

(Note: Gil's attachment was difficult to read so his poem is printed below.)

Early Morning Dance

Sun's globular entrance,
framed with wind shaped withered trees
captures my imagination.
Focus on a single wave expires
with rhythmic pounding of surf
On sand, on shore.
Oh, those waves . . . . .
Shimmering, luring, inviting walks,
A traverse of Glynn's Marsh.

We erect barriers, buffers
All the while calculating how many
Ocean birds drown at Sea.
We drown so many different ways
As we wander amid these lands
stretching mountains to the sea
Giving forth, establishing our own bona fides.

Waves yet endure in their brevity
Reused, recycles, reconstituted time and time again.
They capture us in time to see the
Early morning dance of shrimp boats,
their captains and their crews, just offshore
These Golden Isles we once so dearly knew.

Possible of interest to all Brunswick Jr. College alumni is an upcoming “Founders Day” event, “Celebrating our first 50 years”!

I got an invitation or notice in the mail yesterday and it looks pretty interesting. This is the first (inaugural) Founder’s Day Weekend for those who were first graduates of the 1966 class or new to the school (College of Coastal Georgia).

You can register online by visiting this link: www.ccga.edu/foundersday (This is a temporary link) . A list of all the events for the Friday and Saturday event, October 21 and 22 is included on the link. Visit the Hospitality Tent, tour the campus and hear live beach music on the Campus Center lawn. Attend the Alumni Association Meeting, and then enjoy a concert by the Randall Bramblett Band on the St. Simons Lighthouse lawn (free to College Alumni Association members). How about “Breakfast with the Presidents" (current and past) in the Mariners Galley, and then reunite with faculty past and present.

Why visit the College of Coastal Georgia during Founder’s Day weekend?

a) It’s Free!

b) It’s Fun!

c) To see first hand how the campus has changed!
